Course Overview

This course provides an opportunity for students to achieve a vocational qualification in dental technology, and enables them to register with the General Dental Council as a dental technician.

  • Medical emergencies, first aid and communication in the dental team
  • Dental technologies techniques
  • Dental anatomy, oral biology and disease
  • Basic dental biomaterials science
  • Legislation, professionalism and ethics in dentistry
  • Dental public health and preventative dentistry
  • Removable complete prosthodontics
  • Removable partial prosthodontics
  • Dental radiology and imaging
  • Design of fixed prosthodontics
  • Complex dental materials science
  • Techniques for manufacturing fixed prosthodontics
  • Quality assurance in dental technology
  • Principles of orthodontic therapy regimes
  • Design, manufacture and modification of orthodontic appliances
  • Advanced dental technology techniques and procedures
  • Work-based learning in dental technology

Entry Requirements

A minimum of four GCSEs at grade C or above including English and Mathematics and Science (or equivalent), or a Merit grade on the BTEC Level 2.

Delivery & Assessment methods

Practical and theory based learning Strong emphasis on skills development. Work placement in the 2nd year of study Assessment by assignments, viva volce, practical projects, and termly exams.

Progression

Foundation Degree in Dental Technology, BSc Honours in Dental Technology or into full time employment to work as a dental technician.
