Try, apply and succeed through College Open Event
How much can you discover at an Open Event? Rather a lot if you attend Birmingham Metropolitan College’s Open Event next Thursday (26 January). Not only can visitors enjoy trying out a range of practical activities and see the latest innovative techniques used by different areas of industry, they will also gain all kinds of useful knowledge about the way we live and work.
The ‘Try and Apply’ Open Day will run from 5pm-8pm across the College’s three main campuses as well as at the Erdington Skills Centre.
Activities include:

| DIY basics: The Erdington Skills Centre will show you how to repair a dripping tap, repair a hole in a plaster board and cut and fit a skirting board |
| Digital Technologies |
| What next for 3D, bluray and Smart TV? Find out in the Samsung Digital Service Academy plus hands free vacumn cleaning – check out the robotic vacumn cleaner and other new domestic appliances at the Samsung Digital Appliance Academy |
| Engineering/Electronic & Mechanical Engineering |
| From building an interactive circuit to computer-aided design, find out about careers available within the industry |
| Media and Games |

| Hair, beauty and complimentary therapies |
| Make your own body scrub or hair conditioner, enter a nail art competition and take part in a colour analysis test to find out what colours work for you |

| Test your speed and agility or take part in a search and rescue exercise in order to receive a taste of what it takes to be part of the emergency services sector |
| Sport and Fitness |
| Make your own energy drink, attend a golf taster session or receive advice and guidance about sports injuries and massage. Take part in a rowing challenge, skittles, table tennis and fitness testing activities. |

| Develop an experimental approach to learning by producing a sequence of drawings from an observational starting point. Also try your hand at workshop printing using prepared blocks and screens |
| Archaeology |
| An Indianna Jones-style ‘dig in a tray’ activity gives you the chance to uncover artefacts and discover their origins |
| Science |
| Discover a body, collect clues, extract the evidence and use your logic to identify the killer |
| Health and Medical |
| Meet resident patient, Charlie and see if you can dismantle/reassemble his internal organs, plus try dissecting an artificial heart, making a hospital bed and manoeuvring ‘patients’ |
| Dental technology/nursing |
| Explore ceramic techniques that produce natural looking teeth and take part in an interactive activity to construct a dental item |
| Pharmacy |
| Find out exactly how long it takes for tablets to disintegrate in the stomach and discover what’s involved in formulating creams, ointments and suppositories |
Plus a pop-up fashion show, photography exhibition, music jamming session and many more activities.
