Children’s Hospital benefits from student enterprise and Chamber fundraising

A partnership between Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Birmingham Metropolitan College’s students and the Birmingham Chamber has produced fantastic results for the hospitals’ Intensive Care Unit.

Birmingham Children’s Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit received £27,634.08 from Birmingham Metropolitan College’s students who raised money through a series of initiatives co-ordinated by the MET Enterprise Academy, and also activities from a year of fundraising by staff and partners at Birmingham Chamber of Commerce.

Principal and Chief Executive, Dr Christine Braddock CBE had selected the hospital as her chosen charity during her year as President of the Birmingham Chamber during 2010/11.

She said: “It is with immense pride and delight we were able to make this generous donation to Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

“Their vital work and support for children and young people in need of vital care is much admired and respected by everyone at the College and by partners of the Chamber.”

Throughout 2011, business studies students from the MET Enterprise Academy raised money through various sponsorship activities and other initiatives including a heart-shaped image containing Valentines Day messages, plus bake sales, car washes and raffles.

Birmingham Chamber organised various staff fundraising activities, as well as Sports Quiz for members and auction at their Annual Dinner.

Due to the demand of children from all over the country requiring the specialist care provided at the hospital, the unit is expanding from 20 to 31 beds and therefore the donation will be spent on additional pieces of equipment, such as specialist drips and monitors that are requested by the Unit in addition to the financial allocation it receives from the NHS.

Fidelis Hynam, Corporate Partnerships Manager responded, “ We welcome this partnership with open arms. Our friends at the college and the chamber have been so enthusiastic to support our nationally recognised intensive care unit. It really is Birmingham at its best”.
