Information for parents/guardians

The start of college life is an exciting time for our learners. They have made a positive choice to stay on in education and have chosen Birmingham MET as the place they will spend an important part of their lives. Students are much more likely to be successful in their studies if an effective partnership exists between them, their tutors and their parents or guardians. Birmingham MET welcomes parental help in supporting students to attend and achieve to their full potential. This website has many pages that will be of special interest to parents who want to know more about the College and how it supports it's learners.
College contact with parents/guardians
The law (Data Protection Act 1998) states that parents of learners who are under 18 are entitled to some information about their child and his/her studies.
When students enrol on a course here, they are asked to sign a contract which gives us their permission to contact parents for the following reasons:
- Poor attendance
- Academic progress
- Parents' evenings
- Disciplinary issues
- College trips
Students aged 18 and over
According to the law, (Data Protection Act 1998), where a student is aged over 18, parents' rights to information about their child and his/her studies are very limited. The College is required to treat them as adult students.
College Induction
During induction our learners will be introduced to the College, its services and facilities. We will check they are on the most appropriate course for them. Students will be given an assessment to find out if they need extra support to help them to succeed on their course.
Throughout the course we will set individual targets against which students performance will be reviewed on a termly basis.
